Title: How to Build a Better Bird
Each bird is a collection of amazing adaptations to make it possible to fly, dive, navigate across oceans, hunt, sleep on the wing, and so many more functions that are no less that miraculous. Why don’t a bird’s eyes or feet freeze in sub-zero weather? How do birds breathe through their bones? Why don’t birds have feathers in their armpits (wing pits?)? We’ll look at birds from the inside-out to explore the special features birds use to live successfully on every continent and nearly every habitat on Earth. After this presentation, you’ll never look at birds the same way again!
Jim Covel grew up at Lake Merritt where he began a lifelong fascination with birds. Watching birds, banding birds, rearing orphan birds and preparing birds for museum collections has given Jim a unique perspective on birds to feed that fascination.
