SUMMARY: Naturalist Jim Covel will share stories and photos of 50 years of Naturalist Program at Our Nation's1st Wildlife Refuge Lake Merritt.
About: Jim Covel’s father, Paul Covel, was Oakland’s first park naturalist, starting the City’s Naturalist Program that spanned over 50 years. We’ll explore historical photos and stories from the early days of the nation’s first wildlife refuge through the eyes of the nation’s first municipal park naturalist.Following in his father’s steps, Jim has worked as a ranger and interpreter for parks in Northern California, and spent over 34 years as the Director of Training & Interpretation for the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
