TITLE: Hidden in Plain Sight: The Microscopic World of Lake Merritt and SF Bay Speaker: Janai Southworth SUMMARY: Beneath the surface of two of the Bay Area’s most iconic bodies of water, we will explore wild, swirling galaxies of planktonic organisms . OVERVIEW: Thousands of people commute over the Bay Bridge or jog around Lake Merritt every single day, never realizing they are just feet away from a wild, swirling galaxy. In every drop of that water, a silent drama is unfolding—predators are hunting, light is being turned into fuel, and the very breath of Oakland is being generated by organisms smaller than a needle’s point. This talk dives beneath the surface of two of the Bay Area’s most iconic bodies of water. While the San Francisco Bay and Lake Merritt may seem like mere scenery, they are complex engines of biological productivity. We will explore the planktonic communities of both sites—from the hardy diatoms of the salty Bay to the ephemeral blooms of Oakland’s brackish tidal estuary. |
